What is Jamaa?
1.
A service organization whose primary focus is to bring racial harmony and cultural awareness to the community through various activities. JAMAA, which literally means "family" in Swahili, does not have one governing body, instead consisting of dozens of separate and distinct chapters throughout the world. JAMAA appears at high schools and colleges across the United States. Many JAMAA members are also steppers.
Aside from its service to the community, JAMAA has led worldwide philanthropic efforts in Africa. Most sources indicate that JAMAA was first founded by Adrien Tuyaga, a Burundi native, to combat ethnic violence and gang affiliation.
