What is Maeri?

One who 'reinvents', but does not legally change, their given name in order to garner attention, i.e., a gimmicky first name spelling based on a more common name (such as Maeri for Mary). This is usually experimented with in adolescence and dropped as the subject matures.
"When her parents told her she couldn't dye her hair, she pulled a Maeri and tried to reinvent herself in other ways."
"On the first day of class during roll call, she pulled a Maeri and told the teacher she used an alternate spelling on her papers."
