Used to designate satisfaction, liking, or pleasure.

Boy: Look at that girl. Her skirt is extremely short. Miam.

Garçon: Regardez cette fille. Son jupe est très courte. Miam.

When people are on msn or texting or whatever and they want to convey the emotion that they are laughing, they use "lol" , which means "laugh out loud", but most of the time this is a lie, as they didnt actually laugh out loud, (everyones done it), a more suited thing to say is "miam", which is short for "mildly amused".
