Though originally called Petersburg, the name of the city was changed to Petrograd in 1914, as the former name sounded too German. Renamed Leningrad in 1924, and St. Petersburg in 1991. A center of Russian culture, science, and architecture from the Baroque, Industral, and Soviet eras. Birthplace of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
