The act of standing by and doing nothing to effect or change events but attracting attention to the event itself none the less.
I was getting the crap kicked out of me and my buddy Mike was just standing around selling popcorn.

Among salespeople, "selling popcorn" means to sell consumables with a low margin- otherwise known as worthless crap that you can't make a profit off of.
Joe always wins the most monthly sales but he's selling popcorn: matches, paper towels, potholders, work gloves...
I'd hate to take home his commissions.
