(n.) Comes from the word shorty, however often used in a more general sense; most commonly used by those of the southern region of the United States, more specifically, "the ATL" (Altanta, Georgia).

Can also be used as a unisexual term, however it is not unheard of as a substitution for a male's name, typically used in a demeaning nature.
