When the medium of electrical transfer takes a shorter path back to the power source ( cellor batteries) thus shortening the circuit, and leaving out the resistor (motor, lightbulb, buzzer etc.).

Short circuiting will drain the power source at a phenomenal rate, and is best avoided. The most commonly used method of prevention against this is the (see my definition of) fuse

When I was learning this crap in school a few years back we constantly short circuited all our shit toghether to create huge sparks that whooped the batteries in minutes.
