What is Zimmerit?

A form of protection used against magnetic mines by the Germans in World War Two. The material was put on to German Panzers to prevent their distruction. Zimmerit was applied using a type of spatula. There were several patterns including zig-zag, horizontal columns and rows, and vertical columns and rows. One ingredient was saw dust. It was suspected that Zimmerit would ignite when hit by an anti-tank shell and the process was halted in late 1944, but there is no evidence to prove that Zimmerit was ever flamable.
